Temporary Opening of 'Hwayang~Jeokgeum Sea Bridge' During Lunar New Year Holiday
Temporary Opening for 6 Days from Feb 23 to 28 Ahead of Full Opening at End of February
Yeosu Hwayang to Goheung Just 30 Minutes by Car
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 15th that five maritime bridges connecting Jangsu in Hwayang-myeon to Goheung will be temporarily opened for six days from 0:00 on the 23rd to midnight on the 28th during the special traffic measures period for the Lunar New Year holiday.
This decision is aimed at facilitating transportation for holiday travelers returning to their hometowns and local residents during the Lunar New Year, with all five major bridges currently connected and final construction work underway in preparation for the opening.
The road construction project between Hwayang and Jeokgeum connects four islands in Yeosu City (Jobaldo, Nangdo, Dunbyeongdo, Jeokgeumdo). Construction began in December 2011, with a total length of 17 km and a total investment of 390.8 billion KRW.
Once these bridges open, a new tourism belt will be established where visitors can enjoy the pristine natural scenery of the southern coast’s blue sea, coastline, and islands by car.
In particular, the distance between Yeosu and Goheung has been reduced from the original 84 km to 30 km, shortening the travel time from 81 minutes to 30 minutes, making it possible to travel in just 30 minutes.
This is expected to lead to regional economic revitalization through reduced logistics costs and expanded tourism infrastructure.
A city official stated, “Since this is a project of great national interest, we are making thorough preparations to ensure that holiday travelers and local residents can use the roads safely and comfortably during the Lunar New Year.” He added, “We will do our best to complete the premium maritime bridges, aiming for full opening by the end of next month.”

Meanwhile, the long-awaited Hwatae-Baekya Island Bridge construction project has become more tangible with the inclusion of 20 billion KRW in national funding and exemption from the government’s preliminary feasibility study. Once all 11 bridges (Eleven Bridges) connecting Dolsan-eup in Yeosu City to Yeongnam-myeon in Goheung-gun are linked, it is expected to strengthen the southern coastal maritime transportation network and provide a solid foundation for the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo.
