NYT "China Promises to Punish Domestic Companies for Corporate Secret Infringement"
"Avoid Directing Acquisition Activities of Chinese Companies to Obtain Technology"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] As the United States and China are scheduled to sign the Phase 1 trade agreement on the 15th, the US daily The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 14th (local time), citing multiple sources, that "China has promised to punish Chinese companies that infringe or steal corporate secrets."
The NYT also stated, "Chinese authorities have agreed to refrain from directing Chinese companies to acquire sensitive foreign technologies," adding, "This includes acquisition activities by Chinese state-owned enterprises that are against US interests."
The agreement reportedly includes provisions that China will not force technology transfer when foreign companies enter its market.
US officials believe that China has enhanced its competitiveness in industries such as semiconductors through such methods.
The full text of the agreement will be released after the signing. The US-China trade agreement comes about 18 months after the US began its first round of tariffs on Chinese products in July 2018.
