Honam University Professors Accelerate AI and Big Data 'Faculty Competency Enhancement'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Professors at Honam University (President Park Sangcheol) are focusing on enhancing their teaching capabilities by participating in AI and big data workshops during the winter break in preparation for the full implementation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) convergence education for all students starting this semester.
According to Honam University on the 13th, a basic education on big data and AI was conducted with the participation of about 90 professors from 41 departments, marking the beginning of a faculty capability workshop aimed at advancing the university as an AI-centered institution.
The education, held until the 16th, includes special lectures on big data and artificial intelligence by Eunbi Lee and Byeonggwan Park, full-time researchers from the Smart Media Talent Development Institute. The program focuses on Titanic data analysis and prediction, unstructured data word clouds, basics of data analysis, and data processing.
From the 3rd to the 6th of next month, intermediate big data analysis training will be conducted.
Jung Younggi, Chair of the AI-Centered University Promotion Committee (Dean of the ICT Convergence College), said, “This was prepared as a concrete strategic task for Honam University to leap forward as an AI-centered university, including curriculum reform, research on advancing students’ learning environments, and research on teaching methods to strengthen faculty capabilities. We ask for active participation so that the workshop organized by the Teaching and Learning Development Center can achieve its intended results.”
Cha Junseop, Director of the Smart Media Talent Development Institute, stated, “AI education is not exclusive to science and engineering fields but is a fundamental element across all areas. We feel the passion of Honam University striving to become a leading university in information communication and big data by swiftly implementing AI education for all students, curriculum reform, and faculty AI training.”
Meanwhile, Honam University (President Park Sangcheol), selected by the Ministry of Education as a leading university for the 4th Industrial Revolution innovation, has established an ‘AI-Centered University Promotion Committee’ directly under the president to serve as a control tower for AI education and mindset dissemination in order to realize the vision of ‘cultivating AI convergence talents for all students.’
To realize the vision of ‘cultivating AI convergence talents for all students,’ starting this year, the university has prepared an innovative curriculum reform plan that includes ▲ development of AI basic convergence liberal arts courses ▲ mandatory offering of AI courses in each major curriculum ▲ development of at least one AI-linked (convergence) major in every department.
This reform plan increases the required credits for AI-related liberal arts courses in the big data and AI literacy area from 3 to 9 credits, and requires students in each major to take two AI courses (6 credits), making a total of 15 credits of AI courses mandatory.

Additionally, every department will develop and offer at least one linked or convergence major to integrate AI mindsets into their fields of study. Through this interdisciplinary curriculum that breaks down barriers between humanities and sciences and among departments, the university aims to maximize the effectiveness of AI-linked (convergence) education.
