[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The number of counseling centers capable of providing professional consultations for migrant women who have suffered from violence will be expanded to nine this year.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced on the 13th that it will expand by four the number of counseling centers for migrant women victims of violence that offer professional counseling and support for stay and protection in Korean and the languages of their countries of origin.
From the 14th until the 3rd of next month, the Ministry will accept applications from local governments to operate counseling centers for migrant women victims of violence. A review committee composed of about five experts in women's rights and multicultural fields will select the counseling centers after evaluation.
The migrant women counseling centers were first established last year with five locations (Daegu, Chungbuk, Incheon, Jeonnam, Jeju). During the year, 5,332 counseling sessions and 5,348 victim support cases were provided. The centers also operate emergency shelters for victims requiring urgent protection due to violence, providing temporary protection for up to seven days before connecting victims to counseling centers and protection facilities.
