Ministry of Foreign Affairs Holds Consular Meeting on Incidents in the Middle East... Urges Close Monitoring of On-Site Situations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 10th that the Consular Meeting for Incidents and Accidents in the Middle East region was held yesterday in Amman, Jordan, chaired by Lee Sang-jin, Director of the Overseas Koreans Consular Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting was held with consular officers responsible for incidents and accidents from 18 diplomatic missions in the Middle East region attending. Some missions currently on emergency duty related to the Middle East situation, such as the Embassy in Iraq and the Embassy in Iran, participated via video conference to exchange opinions on the local situation in Iraq and other areas, measures taken by the missions to protect overseas nationals, and future action plans.
Director Lee stated, "It is necessary to closely observe and analyze various aspects of how the Middle East situation may affect the safety of overseas nationals," and urged, "Please continuously monitor the on-site situation carefully for each mission."
He also emphasized, "In the worst-case scenario, please re-examine the feasibility of executing emergency plans to ensure the safe evacuation of our nationals, and faithfully reflect the contents recently reviewed with related ministries during this process."

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs official explained, "This Consular Meeting for Incidents and Accidents in the Middle East region served as an opportunity to share experiences and know-how on protecting overseas nationals among consuls in the Middle East, and to review evacuation plans for our nationals in case of emergency together with local consuls in light of the recent Middle East situation."
