MIKTA Foreign Ministers Issue Joint Statement Condoling Australia Bushfire Damage
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Foreign ministers of MIKTA member countries, including Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, and Turkey, issued a joint statement on the 10th expressing condolences for the damage caused by the wildfires in Australia.
MIKTA is a middle-power consultative group consisting of Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, and Australia, launched in September 2013 during the 68th United Nations General Assembly.
In the joint statement, MIKTA foreign ministers expressed regret over the large-scale damage, including loss of life, caused by the wildfires in Australia, and hoped for the swift containment of the fires. They also expressed MIKTA-level solidarity with the Australian government and people in overcoming the wildfires.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "This joint statement, adopted at Korea's proposal, is evaluated as an opportunity to reaffirm MIKTA-level cooperation ahead of Korea's assumption of the MIKTA chairmanship in February this year."
