Jeonnam Fire Headquarters Urges Prevention of Winter Livestock Barn Fires
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Provincial Fire Department (Chief Ma Jaeyoon) has urged special caution in preventing winter livestock barn fires, as there have been many damages.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Fire Department on the 7th, a total of 160 livestock barn fires occurred in the Jeonnam area over the past three years, resulting in 7 casualties and approximately 11.4 billion KRW in property damage.
Among them, 41.3% (66 cases) were concentrated in the winter season (December to February).
By type, cow barns accounted for 50% (80 cases), pig barns 35% (56 cases), and chicken coops 15% (24 cases).
By cause, electrical factors accounted for 51.3% (82 cases), carelessness 29.4% (47 cases), mechanical factors 5% (8 cases), and chemical factors 3.8% (6 cases).
By month, December had 22 cases (13.8%), January 17 cases (10.6%), and March 15 cases (9.4%).
This winter, from November last year to the present, 9 livestock barn fires have occurred, causing property damage of about 250 million KRW.

Park Sangrae, head of Jeonnam Province’s Response and Prevention Division, said, “The concentration of livestock barn fires in winter is analyzed to be due to the use of heating and insulation devices,” and added, “Please prevent fires by following safety rules such as using fuses of rated capacity and standard wires in barns, and regularly removing dust from internal wiring and distribution boxes inside the barns.”
