At the confirmation hearing held at the National Assembly that day, in response to a question from Park Byeong-seok, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, asking, "Are you considering running in the 2022 presidential election after serving as Prime Minister?" Chung replied, "Not at all."
When Park followed up with the question, "Does that mean you intend to focus on your duties as Prime Minister?" Chung answered, "Yes," and added, "If I am confirmed as Prime Minister, I plan to concentrate all efforts on economic revitalization and unity that the people desire in this era."
Regarding his earlier remarks in the opening statement about "actively proposing to the President the formation of a cooperative cabinet after the general election," he explained, "We need to form a cooperative cabinet with political factions that can take responsibility for and operate state affairs together with the ruling party in order to accomplish necessary tasks."

He said, "We have to see the results of the 21st general election, but currently, there is no party with a majority of seats," adding, "Depending on the situation, there may be no party with a stable number of seats as now, or even if there is, unless the current National Assembly Advancement Act is amended, under that law, state affairs cannot progress even a single step without cooperation."
