Mobile Games Account for 46.6% of Total Domestic Game Industry Revenue
South Korea's Game Market Share Ranks 4th After the US, China, and Japan
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] The domestic game industry continues to grow, centered on mobile games.
According to the '2019 Korea Game White Paper' by the Korea Creative Content Agency on the 7th, the domestic game industry's revenue in 2018 was 14.2902 trillion KRW, an 8.7% increase compared to the previous year.
Mobile game revenue increased by 7.2% from the previous year to 6.6558 trillion KRW, accounting for 46.6% of the total domestic game industry revenue. Mobile game revenue surpassed PC game revenue for the first time in 2017. PC game revenue was 5.0236 trillion KRW, up 10.6% from the previous year, and console games reached 548.5 billion KRW, a 41.5% increase.
The global game market size in 2018 was 178.368 billion USD (196.2583 trillion KRW), a 7.1% increase from the previous year. Korea's share in the global market was 6.3%, ranking 4th after the United States, China, and Japan. By platform, PC games held a 13.9% share, ranking 2nd after China. Mobile games held a 9.5% share, maintaining 4th place after China, Japan, and the United States.
Exports of games by domestic game companies amounted to 6.41149 billion USD (7.0546 trillion KRW), an 8.2% increase from the previous year. This accounted for 67.1% of Korea's total content exports (9.55078 billion USD) in 2018. By country, China had the highest export share at 30.8%, followed by the United States (15.9%), Taiwan and Hong Kong (15.7%), Japan (14.2%), Southeast Asia (10.3%), and Europe (6.5%).

Meanwhile, game imports amounted to 305.78 million USD (336.5 billion KRW), a 16.3% increase from the previous year.
