How Much Do People Spend on Delivery Apps in a Year?
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] In October last year, the delivery application (hereafter app) 'Baedal Minjok' introduced a feature that allowed users to check their total order amount, which became a hot topic. Celebrities and famous YouTubers attracted attention by sharing the amounts they spent on social networking services (SNS). Although this feature was temporarily provided, the unexpectedly large order amounts hinted at the recent rapid growth of the delivery app market. So, how much payment was made overall on delivery apps during the past year?
According to big data analytics company WiseApp, from January to November last year, the payment amount on 'Baedal Minjok,' the number one delivery app in the market, was estimated at 5.2 trillion KRW. This was based on a sample survey of payments made via credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, and mobile micropayments on major home shopping and internet shopping platforms.
Considering that the payment amount through major delivery apps was estimated at 4.4 trillion KRW in 2018, Baedal Minjok alone achieved a scale that far exceeded last year's amount by November.
According to analysis by mobile big data platform company IGAWorks, as of November last year, the number of users for the top five domestic delivery app services were: Baedal Minjok 8,857,421; Yogiyo 4,903,213; Baedaltong 427,413; Coupang Eats 185,519; and Foodfly 24,355.

The market share of domestic delivery apps compiled by the Korea Consumer Agency was also in the order of Baedal Minjok (55.7%), Yogiyo (33.5%), and Baedaltong (10.8%). Based on the market share and the estimated payment amount on Baedal Minjok alone, a simple calculation suggests that payments on delivery apps last year could have approached 10 trillion KRW.
