Relief Pitcher GV80 Takes the Mound... Will It Wipe Out Genesis's Slump?
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] As Genesis prepares to launch its first sports utility vehicle (SUV), the GV80, in the domestic market, attention is focused on whether the brand can overcome its sluggish performance in the Korean market last year.
According to the automotive industry on the 5th, the Genesis brand sold 56,801 units in the domestic market last year, a 7.4% decrease compared to the previous year. This was due to the sluggish sales of the flagship model G80, despite strong performances by the G70 and G90 boosting overall sales.
Last year, the G70 sold 16,975 units, up 17.7% from the previous year, and the first-generation flagship sedan G90, which underwent a facelift at the end of 2018, saw sales surge by a remarkable 80.7% to 17,542 units. On the other hand, the Genesis brand’s flagship model G80 only sold 22,284 units, marking a roughly 40% decrease compared to the previous year.
This sluggishness of the G80 is interpreted as being due to anticipation for the fully redesigned G80 model scheduled for release this year and the aging of the existing model. Genesis launched the second-generation G80 in November 2013 and plans to introduce a full-change model to the domestic market this year after seven years.
The GV80, which is rapidly emerging as another flagship model of the Genesis brand, will also be launched in the domestic market in mid-month. The GV80, which has sparked intense interest both domestically and internationally, is expected to inject new vitality into Genesis brand sales this year.
On the first day of the new year, Genesis unveiled the design of the new GV80 for the first time. Although there had been many speculations about the design through spy shots, this is the first time Genesis has officially revealed the design to the public.
Genesis gave the GV80 design the concept of "dynamic elegance." The front features the brand’s signature shield-shaped "Crest Grille," and on both sides, it applies the same quad lamps with four thin and sharp lights that seem to shine. The side implements a gentle parabolic line starting from the quad lamps, smoothly extending from the front wheelhouse and upper door area to the rear wheelhouse.
The rear applies slim quad rear lamps completely separated into two tiers, matching the front lamps, enhancing overall design unity. By minimizing decorative elements and emphasizing a clean image, it expresses a delicate luxury befitting a premium large SUV.
The interior design emphasizes the Korean concept of "beauty of empty space" to maximize comfort and convenience for the driver and passengers. Complex control buttons could distract the driver’s view or concentration.
As a flagship model, it also offers top-tier safety and convenience features. It is the first to apply a front-seat center side airbag developed with Hyundai Motor Group’s proprietary technology, and it enables more advanced autonomous driving by applying next-generation highway driving assistance technology.
Additionally, the infotainment system includes augmented reality navigation, Genesis CarPay (simple payment), Genesis Integrated Controller (handwriting recognition control), and enhanced voice recognition technology.
