5G Smartphone Market Projected to Grow from 10% to 18%
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics sold more than 6.7 million 5G smartphones in 2019.
On the 3rd, Samsung Electronics announced through its global newsroom that it launched 5G models such as the Galaxy S10, Note10, Note10+, Galaxy Fold, and Galaxy A90 last year, selling over 6.7 million units and capturing a 53.9% share of the global 5G smartphone market.
Starting with the Galaxy S10 5G model in April last year, Samsung Electronics introduced smartphones supporting 5G, followed by the Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ in August, and in September, the first foldable phone Galaxy Fold and the mid-range lineup Galaxy A90 5G model, releasing a total of five 5G smartphone models.
This year, Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy Tab S6 5G model. The Galaxy Tab S6 5G is a new tablet product equipped with a premium display and multimedia functions, offering features such as high-quality video conferencing, live and video streaming, and playing cloud and online games with friends.
No Tae-moon, head of Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Business Development Office, said, "We are proud to present a diverse device portfolio to provide consumers with the best 5G experience," adding, "2020 will be the year of Galaxy 5G, and we expect to introduce 5G models to more devices, offering people new mobile experiences they could not have imagined before."
According to global market research firm Counterpoint Research, the 5G smartphone market accounts for 10% of global smartphone sales. It is expected to grow to 18% in 2020. Neil Shah, Vice President of Counterpoint Research, said, "Samsung is a key player driving the development of the 5G market, from 3GPP standards to semiconductors, mobile devices, and network equipment," explaining, "Over the next decade, through early investment and infrastructure building during the 5G growth phase, Samsung has positioned itself to lead the 5G market growth and maintain momentum."

Samsung Electronics stated, "We will focus on improving the speed, performance, and security of future Galaxy 5G devices to lead innovation in the 5G market," adding, "Due to these changes, more people will be able to access a new mobile environment where they can enjoy movies, TV, sports, and communicate with friends and family."
