Turkey Approves Deployment of Troops to Civil War-Torn Libya... Trump Expresses Concern Over Foreign Intervention
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] The Turkish parliament approved a plan on the 2nd (local time) to dispatch its troops to Libya, which is in the midst of a civil war. This move is intended to support the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, who is fighting eastern militia forces in Tripoli and other areas, raising concerns about foreign intervention.
According to Turkey's Anadolu Agency and others, the Turkish parliament held an emergency meeting on the same day to discuss the government's proposal for troop deployment to Libya. Afterwards, a vote was held, passing the proposal with 325 votes in favor and 184 against. Accordingly, the Turkish government was granted full authority to dispatch the necessary number of troops to Libya at an appropriate time over the next year.
Earlier, the Turkish presidential office submitted the troop deployment proposal to parliament at the end of last month. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an stated, "The GNA led by Prime Minister al-Sarraj has requested troop deployment," and added, "We will provide all forms of support." In November last year, Turkey signed a security and military agreement with the GNA, allowing Turkey to provide military equipment and support military training upon the GNA's request.
In Libya, a civil war is ongoing in the capital Tripoli and other areas. The GNA governs the western region centered on Tripoli, while the eastern militia forces are led by Khalifa Haftar, the commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA). With Libya divided into two, there are concerns that Turkey's deployment of its troops will further expand foreign intervention.
