Hyundai Motor Company Sold 4.42 Million Vehicles Worldwide Last Year... "Targeting 4.576 Million Units Next Year"
Domestic 741,842 Units, 2.9% Increase Year-on-Year
Sonata and Grandeur Both Achieve '100,000 Units Club' in Domestic Market
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 2nd that it sold a total of 4,422,644 vehicles globally in 2019, including 741,842 units domestically and 3,680,802 units overseas. Compared to 2018, domestic sales increased by 2.9%, while overseas sales decreased by 4.8%.
Last year, Hyundai showed strong sales in the domestic market and advanced markets, focusing on key models and new vehicles. However, overall performance declined due to weakened demand and sluggish sales in emerging markets.
By model, the Tucson topped global sales with 672,141 units sold worldwide. It was followed by the Avante with 558,255 units, Kona with 307,152 units, and Santa Fe with 274,025 units.
Hyundai set a goal to sell a total of 4,576,000 vehicles globally in 2020, including 732,000 units domestically and 3,844,000 units overseas. A Hyundai official stated, "This year, market conditions are expected to be challenging due to stagnation in advanced markets such as the U.S. and Europe, prolonged global low growth trends, and the spread of protectionism highlighted by trade conflicts. Based on regional responsibility management, we will establish a profitability-centered business operation system, enhance business competitiveness, and secure execution capabilities for future businesses to strengthen profitability and lay the foundation for future business."
In the domestic market, the Grandeur (including 29,708 hybrid models) led sales with 103,349 units sold. Sonata (including 7,666 hybrid models) sold 100,003 units, and Avante sold 62,104 units, bringing total sedan sales to 279,242 units. Notably, both Sonata and Grandeur surpassed 100,000 units in annual sales, achieving the dual milestone of 100,000 units sold in a year for the first time in four years since Avante and Sonata did so in 2015.
Recreational Vehicles (RVs) sold a total of 238,965 units, including 86,198 Santa Fe units, 42,649 Kona units (including 13,587 electric vehicle models), and 36,758 Tucson units.
The growth of hybrid models was also remarkable. Hybrid model sales grew by 36.9% compared to 2018, reaching 44,512 units. Hyundai plans to accelerate sales of electrified vehicles by adding hybrid and plug-in hybrid lineups to the new Tucson model and the improved Santa Fe model scheduled for release this year.
Commercial vehicles sold a total of 139,392 small commercial vehicles, including 98,525 Porter units and 40,867 Grand Starex units. Large commercial vehicles, including medium and large buses and trucks, totaled 27,442 units.
Genesis sold 56,801 units, including 22,284 G80 units, 17,542 G90 units (including EQ900), and 16,975 G70 units.
A Hyundai official said, "Key models such as Sonata, Grandeur, Santa Fe, and Kona played a significant role in driving domestic sales performance. We will focus on the successful launch of the GV80, the first SUV model of the Genesis brand, scheduled for release this month, and continue to introduce competitive new vehicles to maintain growth in the domestic market."
