Lotte Mart Launches 'Vegan Certified' Fully Plant-Based Vegan Mayonnaise
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] As interest in ethical consumption trends grows, especially among the millennial generation, the domestic vegan market is also expanding.
On the 2nd, Lotte Mart introduced the fully plant-based mayonnaise product ‘Hav’eat Healthy Mayo (300g·2,480 KRW)’ at all its stores.
While regular mayonnaise is mainly made from vinegar, egg yolk, and oil, Hav’eat Healthy Mayo uses only plant-based ingredients. Instead of eggs, functional soybeans are used to maximize the savory flavor, making it a product that people with egg allergies or those concerned about cholesterol can safely consume.
Hav’eat Healthy Mayo is a product researched and developed primarily by Lotte Mart’s private brand (PB) research and development (R&D) team. Based on Lotte Mart’s technology and know-how accumulated over more than 20 years of operating large-scale marts in Korea, it is the first PB product to receive vegan certification from the Korea Vegan Certification Institute.
The global vegan market is also growing. According to the International Vegetarian Union and the Korea Vegetarian Union, the worldwide vegetarian population is 180 million, with 54 million vegans. In Korea, the vegetarian population is estimated to be between 1 million and 1.5 million, with about 500,000 vegans. The global research firm Euromonitor predicts that the global plant-based meat market will grow from $1.2 billion in 2010 to $3 billion in 2020, increasing more than 2.5 times over ten years.
