Effortless Handstands and L-Sits... Wow, Atlas Amazes


Atlas, the humanoid robot from Boston Dynamics under Hyundai Motor Group, has flawlessly demonstrated a handstand maneuver that even professional gymnasts cannot perform.


On the 5th (local time), Boston Dynamics released a video on its YouTube channel showing Atlas performing advanced gymnastic moves.

In this video, Atlas begins with a handstand and then successively showcases complex poses that even gymnasts cannot achieve.


While in a handstand, Atlas supports its entire body weight using only its hands, maintaining a nearly horizontal position, and then flips over to perform an 'L-sit' move.


The L-sit is a gymnastic maneuver where the body is shaped like an 'L' while being supported by the hands. Atlas maintained the L-sit for about 5 seconds before flipping its body upward to stand upright.


The series of gymnastic moves demonstrated by Atlas this time go beyond simple balancing or repetitive motions, requiring precise simultaneous control of the upper body, core, and arm joints.


This video, which shows Atlas supporting its entire body weight without any shaking using only both hands with extremely minimal contact area, is an example of Boston Dynamics having reached a high level of technological advancement.


This demonstrates that Atlas now has the capability to carry heavy objects and operate in atypical postures in real manufacturing settings in the future.


Supporting Full Body Weight Steadily with Both Hands Despite Extremely Small Contact Area


This maneuver utilized whole-body control technology based on Reinforcement Learning. The reinforcement learning-based control method is an approach where the robot learns movement and balance strategies on its own through repeated simulations and trial and error.


In particular, when performing complex movements involving continuous changes in contact state and posture transitions, the reinforcement learning-based control approach is especially effective in enabling more flexible motion.

Most notably, the Atlas featured in this video is not the previously shown research model but a development model. This is the first time Boston Dynamics has publicly released footage of the Atlas development model in action.


At CES in January, the Atlas research model drew attention by appearing to introduce the development model, but at that time, the development model was not operational. To emphasize that this is the very first development model, Boston Dynamics engraved the serial number '001' on the side of Atlas's torso in the video.


'Development Model' Released... Now Capable of Working in Atypical Postures


The Atlas development model features autonomous learning capabilities and adaptability for deployment in any work environment, maximizing efficiency in real manufacturing settings.


Hyundai Motor Group plans to deploy the Atlas development model at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) and conduct validation for each process unit moving forward.
