Over 10 million workplace subscribers whose salaries increased last year will have to pay an additional average of 220,000 won per person in health insurance premiums.
The National Health Insurance Service announced that it will conduct year-end settlements reflecting changes in the 2025 salary of workplace health insurance subscribers (employees), and the adjusted amounts will be billed together with the regular insurance premiums for April.
Health insurance premiums are settled every April based on changes in the previous year's salary (monthly wage).
Accordingly, employees whose wages increased last year will have to pay the underpaid premiums for the previous year.
As a result of this settlement, more than 10 million employees whose salaries increased
will have to pay an additional amount exceeding 200,000 won on average.
According to the National Health Insurance Service, among the 16.71 million workplace subscribers,
10.35 million people whose salaries increased will pay an additional 219,000 won per person on average.
On the other hand, 3.55 million people whose salaries decreased will receive a refund of 115,000 won per person on average,
while 2.81 million people with no change in salary will neither pay extra nor receive a refund.
In other words, the majority of subscribers will have to pay additional insurance premiums.
The total settlement amount for health insurance premiums this time is 3.7064 trillion won,
which is about 10% higher than last year (3.3687 trillion won).
Health insurance premiums are originally charged monthly based on salary,
but changes in salary due to annual raises or step increases are not always immediately reflected.
In such cases, premiums may be underpaid during the year,
and these amounts are settled in a lump sum during the year-end settlement in April of the following year.
Therefore, this additional payment is not a new burden,
but rather a belated payment of the premiums underpaid last year.
The adjusted insurance premiums will be billed together with the April 2025 health insurance premiums.
The payment deadline is May 11.
In principle, payment must be made in a lump sum,
but if certain conditions are met, installment payments of up to 12 times can be requested through the workplace.
However, installment payment is only allowed if the additional amount exceeds the monthly premium,
and in the case of automatic payment workplaces, applications must be submitted at least two business days before the payment deadline.
The National Health Insurance Service explained that when salaries change due to raises or step increases,
the workplace must promptly file a notification of salary change.
The later this process is completed, the larger the additional payment amount will be at year-end settlement.
