Recruitment Platform 'Catch' Survey
45% Say "I Will Not Attend Family Gatherings"
During the Chuseok holiday, which lasted up to nine days, the most unwelcome comment for job seekers was, "When are you going to get a job?"
On October 5, the recruitment platform Catch, operated by Jinhaksa, surveyed 1,925 Generation Z job seekers about their Chuseok plans (multiple responses allowed). The most common answer was "family and relatives gatherings" at 55%. This was followed by preparing for employment (30%), resting at home (20%), part-time jobs or internships (10%), domestic or overseas travel (7%), meeting friends (7%), and cultural or leisure activities (5%).
The most dreaded Chuseok nagging, according to job seekers, was "When are you going to get a job?" (38%). The next most common were "You've gained some weight" (16%) and "Someone else already got a job" (14%), ranking second and third, respectively. Other top responses included "When are you graduating?" (9%), "Are there good job prospects in your major?" (8%), "Why don't you lower your expectations a bit?" (8%), and "Why not prepare for a civil service exam?" (5%).
Conversely, the most desired comment to hear during the holidays was "You must be having a hard time preparing for employment" (22%). This was followed by "I respect your choices" (16%), "Get plenty of rest during the holidays" (15%), "Take your time and prepare at your own pace" (12%), "Everything will work out" (11%), "You're doing well even now" (10%), "Take care of your health" (6%), and "Let me know anytime if you’re struggling" (5%).
Kim Junghyun, Head of Catch, commented, "With longer holidays this year, there have been more family gatherings, which has increased the pressure job seekers feel from nagging. Especially since the values that parents and their children consider important in employment differ greatly, it is necessary to have conversations that understand and respect each other's perspectives."
