Hyundai Motor Company's large electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, has become a hit, selling nearly 15,000 units within just six months of its launch.

According to Hyundai Motor Company's IR on August 25, the Ioniq 9 has sold a total of 14,391 units in the global market since its launch in February (4,745 units in Korea and 9,646 units overseas). The Ioniq 9 has attracted particularly strong interest overseas. Although exports began in April, two months after the domestic launch, overseas sales surpassed domestic sales within just four months.

Export units of the Ioniq 9 are produced at Hyundai Motor Company's Asan plant, while vehicles for the U.S. market are manufactured at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), the group's local electric vehicle hub in the United States.

The Ioniq 9 has drawn attention even before its launch as a collaborative product with SK On. It is equipped with SK On's 110.3kWh NCM (Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese) 9 battery. The Ioniq 9 contains more than 500 battery cells, which is about 1.5 times that of the Ioniq 5. Compared to midsize vehicles, which typically use 60 to 70kWh batteries, the Ioniq 9 achieves a battery sales effect that is at least 50% and up to 80% greater per unit sold.

Furthermore, as local sales in the United States increase, the scale of the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC) that SK On can receive also grows, making the Ioniq 9 a collaborative product that drives a 'win-win' for both Hyundai Motor Group and SK On. Hyundai Motor Group is intensifying its efforts to capture the North American electric vehicle market, centered around HMGMA, and SK On is expected to accelerate local battery procurement as well. SK On is currently producing and supplying batteries for Hyundai Motor Group's electric vehicles at its Georgia Plant 1 and 2, and is also constructing a 35GWh-scale joint factory in North America with Hyundai Motor Group.
