Samsung Electronics’ foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) division has secured a major contract worth 22 trillion won from a global big tech company. On this occasion, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, directly revealed that he is the customer in question.

On July 28, Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter), “Samsung Electronics’ new Texas plant will be dedicated to producing Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chips,” adding, “The strategic importance of this plant cannot be overstated.” Earlier that day, Samsung Electronics disclosed that it had signed a semiconductor foundry supply contract worth 22.7647 trillion won. The contract period runs from July 24 of this year until December 31, 2033, making it a long-term contract of 8 years and 5 months in total.
Until now, the production of Tesla’s autonomous driving chips had been almost exclusively handled by the Taiwanese foundry TSMC. Musk explained that Samsung Electronics is currently developing the AI4 chip, while TSMC has completed the design of the AI5 chip and has begun production in Taiwan, with plans to manufacture it at its Arizona plant in the United States in the future. After that, the next-generation AI6 chip will be handled by Samsung Electronics.
In another post, Musk stated, “Samsung Electronics has allowed Tesla to maximize manufacturing efficiency, which is a very important matter,” and added, “I will visit the site myself to accelerate the progress.”
