Attorney Kim Gyeri Discloses Detention Fund Account on Social Media

It has been reported that the detention fund (deposit) account for former President Yoon Sukyeol, who was re-arrested, has reached its limit of 4 million won. This occurred just one day after Attorney Kim Gyeri, a member of Yoon's legal defense team, disclosed the detention fund account number on her social networking service (SNS).

On July 11, Attorney Kim wrote on Facebook, "Since the president would hardly carry cash, he was suddenly taken in without a single penny and couldn't buy anything at all." She continued, "I was told that the detention fund had to be deposited by 4 p.m. on Friday in order to purchase detention items before the weekend, so I made the deposit in a hurry," and she shared both the relevant account number and her transfer details.

Deposit Not Possible Without Official Inmate Number

Attorney Kim explained the delay in transferring the detention funds, saying, "I heard the deposit couldn't be made because an official inmate number had not been assigned," and added, "The inmate number was issued only late on the night of the 10th, and on the morning of the 11th, everyone was preoccupied with the search and seizure."

Afterwards, it was reported that former President Yoon's detention funds reached the limit of 4 million won just one day after the account number was made public. Attorney Kim also shared a transfer notification message saying, 'The transaction amount has exceeded the maximum limit,' and commented, "It is difficult to verify the administrative details precisely," adding, "I will inquire with the detention center on Monday to resolve the matter and provide an update."

Maximum Limit of 4 Million Won Reached in One Day

According to the Ministry of Justice's guidelines for managing deposited items, detention funds can be received regardless of the amount. However, the amount a single inmate can use is limited to 4 million won. Any amount exceeding the limit is kept in a personal bank account under the inmate's name and paid out upon release. In accordance with regulations, former President Yoon can use up to 20,000 won per day in detention. However, the daily spending limit is restricted to purchases such as food. Expenses for medicines, clothing, and bedding are excluded from this limit.

Meanwhile, after his arrest, former President Yoon did not attend the insurrection trial scheduled for July 10 or the special prosecutor's summons on July 11, citing health reasons. In response, Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok's team notified Yoon once again to appear on July 14. Deputy Special Prosecutor Park Jiyoung stated at a briefing the previous day, "We requested former President Yoon's appearance on the 14th through his attorney," adding, "We received a response from the correctional authorities stating that 'there has been no objective evidence of health problems during the initial health check or in the subsequent detention management process.'"
