Stronger and More Refined: The New Dyson Airwrap

"A hair dryer that costs 600,000 won?" In 2018, British home appliance company Dyson launched a hair dryer with a rather shocking price tag of 590,000 won. Since then, Dyson has continued to introduce products that are priced at least twice as high as other brands' hair dryers, which typically cost less than 100,000 won. In fact, the most recently released product, the 'Airwrap Coanda 2X Multi Styler and Dryer (Coanda 2X)', was launched in Korea at a price of around 870,000 won. Is it really worth investing 800,000 won in a hair dryer? I tried the product myself to find out.

The Coanda 2X is available in two colors: Ceramic Pink and Jasper Plum. Since the main customer base is women in their 20s and 30s, the design seems to be targeted at this demographic. Every time Dyson releases a new Airwrap series, it introduces barrels (nozzles) with different configurations, and this time, the standout was the 'Air Smooth' nozzle, which is shaped like a clip for straight styling. The other barrels appeared to be upgraded versions of those included with previous models.

I compared the older Airwrap model, the 'Origin Multi Styler and Dryer' released in 2022, with the new product. The size of the main body was almost the same, but the positions of the power button, airflow control, temperature control, and cooling function buttons had changed slightly. The connector for attaching the barrels had also changed from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.

In particular, the cooling button, which had previously been integrated with the power button on the older model, was changed to a separate button on the new model. While it used to be possible to activate the cooling function with the same button after applying heat during manual styling, now a separate button must be pressed. This was a bit inconvenient at first, as it was unfamiliar.

Twice the airflow power... AI sensors control heat to protect hair

I used the 'Fast Dryer' barrel of the Coanda 2X to dry wet hair. The airflow felt about twice as strong as when using the older Airwrap. Dyson explained that the new product is equipped with a 'Hyperdymium' motor that spins 150,000 times per minute. In addition, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based sensor built into the product automatically adjusts the heat to protect the hair.

Because the airflow was so strong, I was able to dry my hair quickly without increasing the temperature. In fact, it took only about 10 minutes to dry my long, thick hair that reaches my waist. It may have been just my impression, but my hair also seemed less damaged compared to when I used the older Airwrap. This should be a great help in shortening the morning routine for busy modern people.

Next, I used the Air Smooth nozzle to straighten my hair. When I brought the nozzle close to my hair, it automatically detected the hair and closed the clip, and when I moved it away, the clip opened. Unlike a typical flat iron, which applies direct heat to the hair, this device straightens hair by blowing air through it. This made it possible to achieve straight hair without causing excessive damage. Also, the hair was less stiff compared to when straightened with a flat iron. This product seems to be suitable for those who prefer a natural, voluminous straight style rather than the ultra-straight look of a flat iron.

Other barrels have also been upgraded compared to the older model... Easier and more precise styling

The other barrels also appeared to be slightly upgraded compared to the older version. For the curling barrel, which creates voluminous curls, the spacing for adjusting the curling direction was wider than on the older model, and the direction control handle had changed from a round to a flat shape. While this did not make a significant difference in use, it did feel a bit easier to grip when switching directions. The anti-tangle smoothing brush also featured thinner and more delicate grooves compared to the older brush.

I tried creating various styles using the Air Smooth nozzle, curling barrel, and round volumizing brush. My frizzy hair became shiny and voluminous. When using the Air Smooth nozzle, I achieved a sleek yet natural straight style. For awkwardly short bangs and similar areas, the round volumizing brush provided a natural lift.

I was also able to use the smart features that were first introduced with the previous model, the 'Airwrap I.D Multi Styler and Dryer.' After installing the dedicated application (app) 'My Dyson' on my phone, I connected the device via Bluetooth. I then entered detailed information such as hair type, hair length, hair thickness, and style retention, and set my desired styling preferences. Once the settings were complete, the app automatically recognized the barrel attached to the device. After pressing the power button and bringing the barrel to my hair, the device automatically performed the wrap-styling-cold shot functions in sequence. When styling with the Airwrap, applying heat for 10 seconds followed by about 5 seconds of cold air helps set the style. This process, which can feel complicated for those who are not skilled with their hands (so-called 'ddongson'), seems like a very useful feature.

From the perspective of an older Airwrap user, the new Airwrap offered noticeably more refined features and was quite satisfying overall. In particular, the enhanced airflow power, which had been a drawback of the previous Airwrap styler, was a significant advantage. However, the price point, which is still in the 800,000 won range, continues to feel like a heavy burden. For those who are considering purchasing an Airwrap for the first time and are not confident in their styling skills, the new Airwrap may be worth trying.
