Strong Winds, Gusts, and Thunderstorms with Heavy Rain All Weekend... Significant Temperature Drop Expected

Cherry blossoms are in full bloom across the country, but you may need to enjoy them before the weekend. This is because the Korea Meteorological Administration has forecast heavy rain accompanied by strong winds throughout the weekend.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 10th, heavy rain with strong winds and thunderstorms is expected nationwide this weekend (12th-13th). The rain will begin on the morning of Saturday the 12th in Jeju and is expected to spread across the country by the afternoon of the same day, continuing until the early morning of the 13th. In particular, between the 12th and 13th, wind gusts of over 70 km/h (up to 90 km/h in mountainous areas) are expected nationwide.

From the morning of the 13th to the 14th, rain will fall again, mainly in the central regions. On the 13th, rain is expected in the Seoul metropolitan area and inland Gangwon, and on the 14th, heavy rain is forecast for the central regions, Honam, and Gyeongbuk. There is also a possibility of a heavy rain advisory for mountainous areas of Jeju.

The expected rainfall amounts over the weekend are as follows: ▲ Jeju (excluding the north) 20-60mm (up to 80mm or more in mountainous areas of Jeju) ▲ Southern coast of Jeollanam-do, eastern inland of Jeollanam-do, western southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, southwestern inland of Gyeongsangnam-do 10-50mm ▲ Five West Sea Islands and northern Jeju 10-40mm ▲ Gwangju and Jeollanam-do (excluding southern coast and eastern inland), Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongsangnam-do (excluding western southern coast and southwestern inland) 5-30mm ▲ Seoul metropolitan area, inland Gangwon, mountainous Gangwon, Chungcheong, Jeollabuk-do, Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Ulleungdo, Dokdo 5-20mm ▲ East coast of Gangwon 5-10mm.

Lee Changjae, forecast analyst at the Korea Meteorological Administration, said in a regular briefing, "Nationwide rain is expected due to the influence of the northern Jeollijeogiap and the southern low pressure system," adding, "In particular, heavy rain is expected in Jeju."

Jeollijeogiap is a cold low-pressure system that moves southward, carrying Arctic cold air. This Jeollijeogiap is expected to move south with cold air around minus 35 degrees Celsius, and as the Korean Peninsula comes under its influence this weekend, temperatures are expected to drop significantly. In addition, unstable atmospheric conditions may bring hazardous weather such as strong winds, gusts, and thunderstorms.

Some inland areas are expected to see "April snow." The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that snow may accumulate in eastern Gyeonggi, inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, northern mountainous areas of Chungbuk, and northern mountainous areas of Gyeongbuk, with expected snowfall estimated at around 5cm.
