View original imageOn May 9 (local time), U.S. media outlets such as ABC News reported that at around 11:19 p.m., a Frontier Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles (LA) was preparing for takeoff on an international runway at Denver Airport when someone breached the fence and illegally entered. The intruder broke through the airport security system and jumped over the fence onto the runway. The intruder was struck by the airplane, which was accelerating rapidly for takeoff. It was reported that less than two minutes elapsed from the moment the intruder ran onto the runway to the collision with the aircraft.
The captain immediately aborted the takeoff procedure, but the intruder who collided with the aircraft ultimately died. The impact caused a fire to break out in the plane's engine. The 224 passengers and 7 crew members on board evacuated via the emergency slide as smoke filled the cabin. As a result of the accident, 12 people were injured and 5 were taken to the hospital.
ABC News reported that the intruder who collided with the plane suffered burns to parts of their body due to the engine, which led to a brief fire in the engine. One passenger said they heard a loud explosion and saw the engine catch fire.
The Denver airport authorities stated that the pedestrian's identity has not yet been confirmed but is believed not to be an airport employee. An inspection of the area around the fence revealed no damage to the fence itself.
Transportation Secretary Shaun Duffy announced that the scene is being investigated with support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
