Mayor Lee Jangwoo of Daejeon to Begin Official Election Campaign on May 1
"Transforming from a 'Boring City' to an 'Exciting City' and a City Worth Waiting For"
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, announced during a discussion with journalists at the city hall briefing room on April 30, "At around 5:50 p.m. today, I plan to register as a preliminary candidate for Mayor of Daejeon through a representative," adding, "Starting tomorrow, I will begin my official election campaign in earnest."
Mayor Lee stated, "Regarding the election, the first group will be composed of 110 campaign committee chairpersons, about 100 policy advisory members, and approximately 700 people in total, including the campaign headquarters chief."
Assessing the achievements of the 8th popularly elected administration, he commented, "The Defense Acquisition Program Administration, which has demonstrated the greatest influence in the national defense industry, is currently constructing its office building in the shortest time ever. This has marked a turning point in Daejeon's development."
He continued, "The free bus fares for seniors aged 70 and over, and Daejeon ranking first in youth marriage rates, are results that show the marriage incentive support policy has been highly effective."
Regarding support for small business owners, Mayor Lee emphasized, "The amount provided for interest subsidies has been tripled from the previous 200 billion won to 600 billion won," and "The policy of providing direct support to small business owners has also proven to be highly effective."
On Daejeon's long-standing projects, he criticized his predecessor by stating, "Issues such as the commencement of construction of Urban Rail Line 2 after 28 years, the completion of the Yuseong Integrated Terminal, and the completion of Lake Park after 11 years, highlight nearly 12 years of administrative stagnation in the city government's past."
He explained, "The Daejeon Midnight Festival was promoted to enhance the competitiveness of the old downtown, revitalize the local commercial district, and strengthen the city's brand. In doing so, we have transformed Daejeon's reputation from a 'boring city' to an 'exciting city' and turned it into a city people are willing to wait in line for."
He added, "Currently, Daejeon has become the hottest city among people in their teens, twenties, and thirties. If this trend continues, Daejeon can grow into a world-class city."
