Established in 1973, this year marks its 35th edition. Every year, two outstanding researchers are selected and each receives a plaque and a prize of 200 million won. The award ceremony for the 35th Sudang Award will be held on May 27 at Lotte Hotel Seoul.
Professor Hwang Ildoo, honored in the Basic Science category, was recognized for elucidating the developmental signaling systems and vascular bundle evolution principles that are key to plant biomass production and the development of environmentally friendly crops. In particular, he was the first in the world to clarify the signaling mechanism of the plant growth hormone cytokinin, and to prove that this hormone plays a decisive role in the development of vascular bundles and the regulation of plant senescence.
He also identified that proteins derived from plant phloem are crucial factors in determining leaf morphology, and newly proposed the integrated regulation mechanism between leaves and phloem, as well as the evolutionary principles of vascular plants. Professor Hwang has received the Macrogen Science Award, the Cargill-Hallym Life Science Award, and the National Academy of Sciences Award of Korea, among others.
Professor Cho Sungbae, awarded in the Applied Science category, was recognized for his contributions to solving industrial problems through the use of advanced artificial intelligence technologies. Professor Cho conducted research to improve the accuracy of energy demand forecasting by combining convolutional neural networks (CNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks.
In particular, by using household electricity usage data, he demonstrated the potential for energy efficiency improvements by deriving consistent predictions across various variables such as time periods, weather, and lifestyle patterns. This research was selected as a top 1% most-cited paper in the journal 'Energy' in 2020.
In addition, Professor Cho has expanded the industrial applicability of deep learning technologies across various fields, including smartphone sensor-based activity recognition, mobile landmark detection, and vehicle noise classification. He has received the Korea Information Science Society Academic Award and the Order of Service Merit, and has served as the Chair of the Technology Innovation Subcommittee of the National Artificial Intelligence Committee.
