Iran Notifies That "One Korean Vessel Is Allowed to Transit"
One Korean Oil Tanker Begins Voyage Near Qatar on May 19
Scheduled to Pass Through the Gulf of Oman on May 20
A large oil tanker registered under the South Korean flag has been confirmed to be passing through the Strait of Hormuz. On May 19 (Korean time), the vessel began its voyage in waters near Qatar and is scheduled to pass through the Gulf of Oman during the day on May 20.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on May 20, the South Korean vessel, which started its operations in waters near Qatar in the early hours of May 19, is expected to pass through the Gulf of Oman on May 20, following the transit route designated by Iran.
Since the outbreak of war between the United States and Iran in February this year, 26 Korean vessels have been trapped in the Strait of Hormuz. If the current vessel successfully exits the Strait of Hormuz, it will be the first case of a Korean ship fully passing through the strait since the conflict began.
This transit through the Strait of Hormuz is taking place following consultations with the Iranian side. An official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries explained, "On the night of May 18, the Iranian side informed the Korean diplomatic mission that one of our vessels could pass through the Strait of Hormuz." The official added, "The Korean government shared this information with the shipping company, and after internal consultations, the company decided to commence the transit." The official further stated, "For the safety of the vessel, the movement is being coordinated with relevant countries, including Iran."
