"Tank Day on May 18?"... Jeonnam Office of Education Outraged by Starbucks Marketing
'5/18' and 'Thump on the Desk' in Tumbler Promotion Spark Controversy over Evoking State Violence
Jeonnam Office of Education Strongly Condemns: "Historical Pain Must Not Be Commercialized"
Pledges Comprehensive Reinforcement of May 18 Democracy History Education for Future Generations
On the anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, Starbucks Korea's so-called "Tank Day" marketing campaign, which invokes memories of the violence under military dictatorship, is facing strong backlash.
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education has condemned this as a "tragedy in which historical pain was irresponsibly commercialized," strongly denouncing the incident and declaring that, taking this situation as a lesson, it will substantially strengthen education on the history of the May 18 democracy movement for future generations.
On May 20, the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education issued a sharp rebuke regarding the controversy over Starbucks Korea's "Tank Day" event held on the 46th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, calling it "highly inappropriate promotion that ignores historical significance and public sentiment."
The controversy arose as Starbucks Korea promoted its "Tank Series" tumblers using the term "Tank Day" along with phrases such as "5/18" and "Thump on the Desk!"
The provincial office pointed out that the use of expressions that directly or indirectly evoke state violence during the military dictatorship era, especially on the anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, is a clear example of disregarding both historical context and public sentiment.
A representative of the office stated, "May 18 is a foundational event in Korean democracy and a sacred memory that symbolizes the values of democracy, human rights, and peace," emphasizing, "The suffering of citizens who sacrificed for democracy and memories of state violence must never be trivialized or commercialized under any circumstances."
The official further noted, "This incident must not be dismissed as a simple corporate mistake, but should be recognized as a serious problem reflecting a lack of social sensitivity to historical pain and the values of democracy." The official also urged, "The greater a company's social influence, the higher its sense of responsibility toward history and society must be," and called for thorough measures to prevent recurrence.
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education believes that, in light of this controversy, the importance of history education to correctly convey the historical significance of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and the values of democracy, human rights, and peace to future generations has grown even greater.
Accordingly, the office plans to further enhance education to carry on the spirit of May 18 through initiatives such as operating a "May 18 Democratic Uprising Education Week," distributing tailored educational materials for each school level, organizing "dark tours" of May 18 historical sites in Jeonnam, and implementing student-participatory programs on democracy, human rights, and peace.
This controversy is a clear example of the repercussions that can arise when a company's marketing strategy clashes with social sensitivity. Even if a company's promotional activities are aimed at profit and attracting attention, they must be grounded in a fundamental understanding of the nation's historical context and public sentiment.
