Average Remaining Term of 17.9 Years for STARK-Related Patents
Building an IP Defense for the Robotic Surgery Market
LivesMed, a company specializing in surgical robots and minimally invasive surgical instruments, announced that it has secured a cumulative total of 1,000 intellectual property (IP) rights. The company explained that it has strengthened its technological competitiveness and patent defense system ahead of the upcoming unveiling of its next-generation surgical robot, STARK.
According to LivesMed on May 20, the number of IP rights secured annually over the past five years (2021–2025) increased from 53 to 306. During this period, the company concentrated on securing 756 IPs, accounting for approximately 75% of its cumulative IP portfolio.
Of the entire patent portfolio, 230 patents, or 33.4%, pertain to core technologies related to multi-joint end tool-based innovations. Patents related to STARK total 132, making up 19.2% of the portfolio, the largest share for a single product line. The average remaining term of rights for these patents is 17.9 years.
The company explained that it has operated a system that simultaneously designs technology development and patent strategies from the early stages of R&D. In addition, it has implemented a patent portfolio strategy that includes both blocking patents to prevent design-arounds by later entrants and patents that broadly cover adjacent technologies.
LivesMed plans to unveil its next-generation surgical robot, STARK, for the first time on May 26, 2026. With this milestone, the company intends to accelerate its transition from a minimally invasive surgical instrument company to a global robotic surgery platform company.
