The scope of the research includes developing mid- to long-term strategies to prevent population decline over the next five years in the population decline areas of Gapyeong County and Yeoncheon County, as well as the areas of interest, Dongducheon City and Pocheon City. The research project will be conducted by the Korea Labor Institute Foundation and will proceed over the next five months.
Gyeonggi Province plans to establish the 2nd Basic Plan for Responding to Population Decline Areas, to be implemented from 2027 to 2031, and submit it to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety by the end of September.
Based on the results of this research project, Gyeonggi Province will not only formulate the 2nd Basic Plan for Responding to Population Decline Areas but also utilize the findings for the formulation of investment plans for the Local Extinction Response Fund, the discovery of collaborative projects with cities and counties, and the review of institutional improvement measures.
During the kickoff briefing session, participants shared and discussed the main directions for key tasks, including: analysis of the current situation in population decline and interest areas; diagnosis of population structure and regional conditions; development of vision, objectives, and core tasks; preparation of detailed projects for each strategy; identification of new projects linked to the Local Extinction Response Fund; and establishment of mid- to long-term support strategies at the metropolitan level.
Jo Jangseok, Policy Chief of Gyeonggi Province's Balanced Development Planning Office, stated, "This research is an important starting point for thoroughly diagnosing the conditions of areas experiencing or at risk of population decline within the province and for developing metropolitan-level response strategies. We will work together with cities and counties to discover projects that can be linked to the Local Extinction Response Fund and ensure these efforts lead to the revitalization of local communities."
