Strengthening the Community Safety Net to Save Lives... Gijang County Activates Suicide Prevention Response System
Discussion on Early Detection of High-Risk Groups
and Strengthening Interdepartmental Collaboration
Gijang County has begun building a collaborative framework with relevant organizations to strengthen its community-based suicide prevention response system.
Gijang County (led by County Governor Jeong Jongbok) held the "2026 Gijang County Suicide Prevention Meeting" on the 14th.
This meeting, presided over by Deputy Governor Kwon Gihyuk (Suicide Prevention Officer), was attended by officials from relevant departments and the Gijang County Mental Health Welfare Center. Participants shared the current suicide situation in the region and the progress of major suicide prevention projects, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation.
In line with the recent announcement of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy and the launch of the Life Keeper Promotion Headquarters, the county recognizes suicide as a public health issue that must be addressed by the entire community, not just individuals. The county is working to strengthen interdepartmental collaboration accordingly.
To this end, Deputy Governor Kwon Gihyuk has been designated as the Suicide Prevention Officer. Through regular suicide prevention meetings, the county plans to continuously analyze the status of suicides in the region, review the progress of policies, and reinforce the response and cooperation system for high-risk groups.
The meeting focused on key topics, including the operation of Life-Respect Safe Villages, promotional activities for intensive management during the high-risk suicide period (March to May), management of locations with high suicide incidence within the county, and the establishment of a dedicated suicide prevention system.
In particular, the attending departments reached a consensus on the need to strengthen a prevention-oriented cooperation system in which both the community and the administration participate together to ensure early detection of high-risk groups and effective crisis response.
