Lee Jangwoo Urges Heo Taejeong to State Position on Debates and Special Prosecutor Bill
Pledge to Establish 324-Hole Park Golf Courses
Across All Five Districts of Daejeon
Lee Jangwoo, the People Power Party candidate for Daejeon Mayor, stated at a press conference held at his campaign office on the 19th, "Let's continue to have debates regarding Daejeon's central policies," directly addressing Heo Taejeong, the Democratic Party candidate for Daejeon Mayor. He added, "When it comes to the numerous pending issues piling up like mountains, he should clarify his own philosophy and vision for city administration, but he keeps avoiding it."
He continued, "A special prosecutor bill aimed at assigning blame to one individual has been proposed. I demand that candidate Heo Taejeong clearly state his position on the special prosecutor bill being pushed by the Democratic Party, whether he supports or opposes it."
Lee Jangwoo pledged to expand the city's sports infrastructure and build a healthy city for citizens by promising to establish new park golf courses throughout all five districts and develop running courses centered around the city's three major streams. These pledges are drawing attention, especially as criticism has been raised that Heo Taejeong's administration during the 7th term of local government created gaps in the city's health and sports infrastructure.
Aiming to create the nation's top city for community sports, a mega-sized, hub park golf complex of about 480,000 square meters will be built in Seongbuk-dong, Yuseong District. This project, which will feature a total of 90 holes, will be developed as a premium, nationwide sports facility including a clubhouse, forest leisure sports, exercise facilities, as well as recreational and convenience amenities.
In addition, new and expanded park golf courses will be established across all five districts: Yongun-dong in Dong District, Jungchon-dong in Jung District, Moksang-dong in Daedeok District, Gujeuk-dong and Taprip-dong in Yuseong District, as well as Giseong and Gasuwon-dong and the Dunsan area in Seo District. The overall scale will total 324 holes.
During the 9th local government term, the 'Premium Running Crew Daejeon' project will be fully promoted, with plans to create an urban environment where all citizens can exercise safely and conveniently.
Running courses will be systematically developed around the city's three major streams—Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon. The city will also gradually implement a Daejeon-style running network that connects to Hanbat Arboretum, Expo Plaza, and the Daecheong Lake 500-ri Road.
Starting with pilot projects at Gapcheon Station Runner Station and Expo Plaza, open convenience facilities such as lockers, changing rooms, and showers will be expanded. There are also plans to enhance nighttime safety for exercise by increasing the installation of LED guide lights, logo projectors, and streetlights.
Lee Jangwoo stated, "Citizens have experienced considerable inconvenience due to the sports administration vacuum during the 7th local government term," and added, "In the 9th term, we will make citizen health and community sports the core of the city's competitiveness and complete Daejeon as a special city for health that attracts visitors from all over the country."
The demolition of Hanbat General Stadium is cited as a representative example of the sports administration gap during the 7th term. The project proceeded without establishing a replacement multipurpose stadium, which has been criticized as a 'no-plan sports administration.'
According to Article 3 of the current Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Installation and Operation of Sports Facilities, metropolitan cities and provinces are required to install and operate sports facilities that can host international and national-scale multipurpose sports competitions. However, it has been pointed out that a gap in citizen multipurpose stadiums occurred during the 7th term of local government.
Hanbat General Stadium, built in 1959 with donations from Daejeon citizens and Chungnam Province residents, is a symbol of sports in Daejeon. In particular, the late Kim Swoo-geun, one of Korea's most renowned architects, participated in the remodeling design for the 1979 National Sports Festival, making it an iconic building. The stadium is highly regarded not only for its unique design, inspired by traditional white porcelain, but also for its cultural and historical value, serving as a model for Jamsil Olympic Main Stadium.
Criticism continues that, even while pursuing the joint hosting of the 2027 Chungcheong Summer World University Games, the administration created a gap in the function of the citizen multipurpose stadium, which has been called a highly irresponsible act.
During the 8th local government term, the Daejeon City Administration made the promotion of citizen health and the vitalization of community sports a core city administration task and concentrated administrative resources on expanding balanced sports infrastructure across all five districts.
