Fire Department and Police Investigate Cause of Blaze
A fire broke out at the Donghae Plant of Ssangyong C&E Cement. The blaze was extinguished in about three hours, and no casualties were reported.
According to fire authorities, at around 1:21 p.m. on May 16, a fire occurred at the Donghae Plant of Ssangyong C&E Cement, located in Samhwa-dong, Donghae-si, Gangwon Province. The fire reportedly started for unknown reasons on a conveyor belt in the clinker storage area—a core intermediate material for cement—at the plant, which has a height of 20 meters. Approximately 50 meters of the belt were destroyed by the fire.
The fire is believed to have originated from the conveyor belt in the clinker storage area. Fire authorities managed to contain the spread at an early stage before the flames expanded significantly at around 3:09 p.m., and the fire was completely extinguished by 4:29 p.m. As of now, there have been no reported casualties.
A total of 56 personnel, including firefighters, police officers, and officials from Korea Electric Power Corporation, as well as 23 pieces of equipment such as pump trucks, were deployed to the scene.
