Kremlin: "Cooperation Exceeding $200 Billion Is a Top Priority"
Putin and Xi Expected to Exchange Views on Trump-Xi Summit
With Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to China imminent, the Kremlin announced that Russia and China are set to discuss bilateral relations and the overall international situation.
According to TASS, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a briefing on the 15th (local time), "President Putin's visit to China will take place in the very near future," adding, "The main agenda will be the overall relationship between the two countries."
Spokesman Peskov explained that "the privileged strategic partnership and trade and economic cooperation exceeding 200 billion dollars (approximately 300 trillion won) per year are top priorities," and noted that "cooperation in various fields such as humanitarian affairs, education, and advanced technology will also be discussed." He added, "The international situation will also be an important agenda item."
He also stated that they are "closely monitoring the situation" regarding the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held in Beijing the previous day.
Additionally, he said, "The upcoming contact between the Chinese and Russian leaders will be a good opportunity to exchange views on the outcome of the U.S.-China summit," expressing hope that President Putin will receive details about the summit directly from President Xi.
Regarding the specifics of President Putin's schedule in China, he said, "All preparations and major agreements have been finalized," and that "an official announcement will be made soon." However, he added, "Since some matters are still being coordinated with the Chinese side, we will not reveal them prematurely."
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on this day, citing multiple sources, that President Putin is expected to visit China for a one-day trip on the 20th. This means President Putin will visit China just five days after President Trump's trip to the country concludes.
