Hanam City to Intensively Manage 259 Large-Scale Food Waste-Generating Businesses
Hanam City in Gyeonggi Province has begun year-round intensive management of large-scale food waste-generating businesses within its jurisdiction to reduce the amount of food waste generated and to realize a sustainable resource-circulating city.
The city has been conducting guidance and inspections targeting 259 large-scale food waste-generating businesses in the area since May, aiming to proactively manage the increasing volume of food waste resulting from population growth and the expansion of the dining-out industry, as well as to encourage voluntary reduction efforts by businesses.
The inspections target businesses that generate large amounts of food waste, including restaurants with a business area of 200 square meters or more, and group catering facilities that serve an average of at least 100 people. The city has organized inspection teams to sequentially visit each business and is closely examining all aspects of food waste management at these sites.
The main items inspected include: whether food waste reduction and disposal plans are being implemented; the appropriateness of food waste processing and recycling; and the preparation and storage of waste management registers.
For minor violations identified during inspections, the city will provide on-site guidance for immediate correction and also inform businesses of efficient management methods to help reduce food waste. In contrast, for serious legal violations or repeated offenses, the city plans to impose administrative actions such as fines in accordance with relevant laws.
A Hanam City official stated, "Efficient management of large-scale food waste-generating businesses is an important task for reducing municipal solid waste and achieving carbon neutrality. We hope business owners will actively participate and cooperate in reducing solid waste and promoting a culture of resource circulation."
