Lee: "Saemaul Undong Was Initiated by President Park Chung Hee and Achieved Results, Still Useful Today"
May 14 On-Site Meeting at Saemaul Undong Central Association in Seongnam
"If Swayed by Political Reasons, You Will Not Be Respected"
On May 14, President Lee Jaemyung stated, "It is clear that the Saemaul Undong was a movement initiated by President Park Chung-hee to improve Korea's culture and economic and social environment, and it achieved considerable success." He added, "It is still highly useful in this era."
President Lee made these remarks during a field meeting held in the afternoon at the Saemaul Undong Central Association in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. He explained, "As a responsible global power, we must shoulder certain responsibilities in the international community," and continued, "One of those responsibilities is to help people around the world live happier lives in better environments, even if only a little."
He went on to say, "I believe that just as we benefit from the international community, we should also provide support and engage in volunteer service."
President Lee also remarked, "As I travel around the world, I often think that countries classified as underdeveloped could greatly benefit from a movement like Saemaul Undong," and added, "In particular, agricultural support activities seem to be truly important."
He continued, "By sharing our experiences with those facing difficulties, and by combining our efforts and volunteer work, we can help improve conditions in those countries. This, in turn, can strengthen the relationship between Korea and those nations." He added, "Perhaps it's an ambitious idea, but we might even be able to contribute to universal human rights and a better environment worldwide."
Meanwhile, President Lee emphasized the political neutrality of the Saemaul Undong. He stated, "If the movement keeps being swayed by political interests, it won't be respected," and continued, "It may seem desirable to follow politicians around, but in reality, they will disregard you. If you confidently fulfill your role, earn positive evaluations from the public, and increase your membership and organizational strength, politicians will come after you."
