Na Hongjin's "Hope" Competes for the Palme d'Or at Cannes... Park Chanwook Becomes First Korean Jury President
The 79th Cannes Film Festival Opens on May 12
Yeon Sangho's "Gunche" and Jung Joori's "Dora" Invited
On May 12 (local time), three Korean films will compete at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which opens in Cannes, France. Director Park Chan-wook will serve as the first Korean jury president of the main competition, while director Na Hong-jin's "Hope" is aiming for a major award. Director Yeon Sang-ho's "Gunche" and director Jung Ju-ri's "Dora" will be unveiled through the Midnight Screening and Directors' Fortnight sections, respectively.
The most anticipated work is undoubtedly "Hope." It will have its world premiere on the afternoon of the 17th at the Lumière Grand Theatre in Cannes. The film tells the story of mysterious beings appearing at Hopo Port in the Demilitarized Zone. The cast includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon. Hollywood actors such as Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell play alien characters. All are scheduled to attend the red carpet event before the screening.
This is the first time since Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave" and Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Broker" in 2022 that a Korean film has entered the competition section. "Hope" will compete for the Palme d'Or against 21 other films, including Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Lamb in a Box," Pedro Almodovar's "Bitter Christmas," and Cristian Mungiu's "Fjord."

"Gunche" will premiere at midnight on the 15th in the Midnight Screening section. It is a thriller in which survivors trapped in a building under lockdown due to a mysterious virus fight against the infected. The cast includes Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, and Shin Hyun-bin. "Dora" is an official selection in the Directors' Fortnight. Kim Do-yeon and Sakura Ando, a three-time winner of the Japanese Academy Award for Best Actress, portray the complex emotional journey of two wounded characters.
