Elementary School Student Goes Missing During Family Visit to Juwangsan; Search Continues for Second Day
Went Hiking Alone After Visiting the Temple
Police: "No Signs of Criminal Activity"
An elementary school student who visited Juwangsan National Park in Cheongsong-gun, North Gyeongsang Province with his family has gone missing, and authorities have been conducting a search operation for the second day.
According to the North Gyeongsang Fire Headquarters and the police on May 11, Mr. A (11, a sixth-grader), who traveled from Daegu with his family the previous day to visit a temple in Juwangsan National Park, went hiking alone toward Jubong Peak and has been missing since.
Mr. A's parents notified the fire authorities at 5:53 p.m. on the day of the disappearance, after their son, who had gone hiking without a mobile phone, did not return for a considerable amount of time.
Firefighters, police, and other agencies mobilized personnel and equipment for a search operation but were unable to locate Mr. A.
After checking the closed-circuit (CC) TV footage in the national park, authorities determined that there were no indications linking Mr. A's disappearance to criminal activity.
On the second day of the search, authorities have deployed 96 personnel, one helicopter, and various equipment to the site.
Mr. A, who is about 145 cm tall and has a slender build, was reportedly wearing a Samsung Lions uniform on the day of his disappearance.
Mr. A's family told police, "About a year ago, we hiked here as well, but he felt tired and had to come down before reaching the top," adding, "On the day he went missing, he said, 'I'll just go up a little and then come back.'"
