Reflecting on the Value of Democracy Through Hands-On and Creative Activities
The Seo-gu Volunteer Center in Gwangju held the "4th 5.18 Memorial Bookmark Drawing Competition – The Reasons We Must Not Forget" at the 5.18 History Park in Ssangchon-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, on May 9.
This competition was organized to convey the meaning and value of democracy to generations who did not experience the May 18 Democratization Movement firsthand, and to remember the spirit of sacrifice and solidarity through volunteer activities.
The event was centered around participatory programs, allowing participants to naturally learn about and empathize with the historical significance of May 18 through various hands-on experiences.

Main programs included a comprehensive timeline explanation by a 5.18 docent, interpretation and singing of "March for the Beloved," guided tours of historic sites, leaving commemorative messages, trying traditional rice balls, and participating in a May Day experience booth in collaboration with the May 18 Memorial Foundation.
Participants then created their own bookmarks themed "The Reasons We Must Not Forget," reflecting on the meaning of May.
Notably, this competition was more than a simple commemorative event, as it combined hands-on and creative activities to help youth and citizens understand and remember the spirit of May 18 more easily and deeply.
After the event, an online exhibition featuring participants' works will be held to share the spirit of May with a wider audience.
