US Military Strikes Iran, Citing Self-Defense Against Iranian Attack

The U.S. military confirmed on May 7 (local time) that it had carried out a strike inside Iran in the exercise of its right to self-defense. It explained that this was in response to an "unprovoked attack" by Iran on U.S. Navy missile destroyers moving from the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman.

View original imageThe United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that "the USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87) were transiting an international maritime corridor when Iranian forces launched missiles and drones and also dispatched small boats."
CENTCOM continued, "We neutralized approaching threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attack on U.S. forces. These included missile and drone launch sites, command and control facilities, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance outposts." It added, "No U.S. assets were damaged."

The statement also noted, "CENTCOM does not seek to escalate tensions, but remains postured to protect U.S. forces."
