'The Power of Gwangju Songjeong Neighbors'... Rays of Hope Shine on Three Homeless Individuals Near the Station
Songjeong 2-dong Community Security Council Identifies Homeless Through 'Finding Hidden Neighbors' Campaign
Temporary Shelter, Living Expenses, and Medical Support Provided... Additional Housing Support Planned
Three homeless individuals living on the streets near Gwangju Songjeong Station have been able to rebuild their lives thanks to the efforts of local residents. They were discovered by the Songjeong 2-dong Community Security Council in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, during the ‘Finding Hidden Neighbors’ activity, which involved canvassing alleyways and commercial areas. This led to the provision of temporary shelter, as well as support for living expenses and medical care.
According to Gwangsan-gu on May 6, the Songjeong 2-dong Community Security Council identified the three homeless individuals last April while conducting the ‘Finding Hidden Neighbors’ campaign, which focused on neighborhoods and areas near Gwangju Songjeong Station.

Immediately after finding them, the Songjeong 2-dong Community Security Council conducted counseling to confirm their willingness to receive support, and then, together with the Songjeong 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center, initiated emergency assistance.
First, temporary shelter was secured to provide them with a place to stay. Private resources were mobilized to supply blankets, clothing, and daily necessities. In addition to living expense support provided through the emergency welfare system, the Gwangsan-gu Public Health Center offered visiting nursing services to monitor their health. Applications for basic livelihood security benefits and case management services were also facilitated.
Going forward, Songjeong 2-dong plans to consult with Korea Land and Housing Corporation to explore additional housing support options and will continue efforts to support their independence.
Park Hagu, Chair of the Songjeong 2-dong Community Security Council, stated, “If it were not for the ‘Finding Hidden Neighbors’ campaign, we would neither have met nor been able to help these homeless individuals struggling on the streets. We will pay even closer attention to ensure no one is left in a welfare blind spot.”
