As part of its implementation of the K-RE100 initiative for public institutions, the company plans to transform substations into hubs for renewable energy production.
On May 6, Korea Electric Power Corporation announced plans to gradually install solar facilities at approximately 500 locations across the country, using leftover land, landscaping areas, and small plots generated during the construction of substations. Through this initiative, substations, which have traditionally focused on supplying electricity, will be converted into “renewable energy hubs.”
The company has named this initiative the “Transmission and Substation Idle Asset Energization Project,” emphasizing its significance in building the foundation for K-RE100 compliance in the public sector and strengthening energy self-sufficiency. Korea Electric Power Corporation also expects it to contribute to securing a stable power supply base amid growing global energy supply uncertainties.
In particular, when landscaping areas with trees at mountain-type substations are converted into solar power facilities, a disaster prevention effect is anticipated, as this will serve as a physical barrier to the spread of wildfires. To this end, Korea Electric Power Corporation is in discussions with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to improve relevant regulations.
The company has formed a dedicated task force to launch a pilot project with a capacity of 1MW this year, and plans to systematically expand facilities to a total capacity of 95MW by 2030.
