[Content Commerce] 'Mungchi Workshop' Solves Knitters' Inconveniences
Interview with Juhee Moon, Head of Mungchi Workshop
One-Stop Shopping for Materials, Patterns, and Tools
'Mungchi Workshop' is a specialized hand-knitting YouTube channel that supports beginners in completing their own hand-knitted projects through instructional content and DIY kits, and has amassed approximately 30,000 subscribers. The channel is led by Juhee Moon, who, after graduating with a degree in business administration and working in corporate finance and accounting for 10 years, is also a veteran knitter with more than 20 years of experience dating back to her university days.
Her first encounter with knitting was as a child, inspired by an 'apple pattern' she saw in a Japanese magazine. She started following the pattern with a single 500-won crochet hook, but finishing the project proved challenging. The sense of accomplishment she felt after many trials and errors was unique, and she continued to build her skills through self-study. At the time, there were few opportunities to learn hand-knitting in a systematic way. Naturally, Moon began to consider how best to teach beginners efficiently, which eventually led her to pursue it as a career.
Moon explained, "After registering my business in 2010, I began offering offline classes at study cafes and department store culture centers. As the number of students steadily increased, I opened 'Mungchi Workshop' in 2012."
While teaching, she discovered another challenge. To get started with knitting, one not only needed yarn and needles, but also stuffing and various accessories, which had to be purchased separately, often requiring trips to Dongdaemun Market. Many beginners struggled because they did not know what materials to buy or where to find them. To address this inconvenience, Moon developed and began selling DIY kits that provide all necessary materials in one package.
As questions from kit buyers became more frequent and repetitive, another need emerged. Inquiries about specific techniques or steps in the production process highlighted the necessity for content that systematically explained the basics. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated her efforts to run the YouTube channel and expand online sales. While the initial focus was on basic lessons, more recently she has broadened the scope to include short, practical short-form content.
Moon said, "The most popular content these days is practical items that can be used immediately in daily life. Projects that can be completed in a short time and make great gifts, such as bookmarks or lip balm pouches, are especially well received." She added, "There is a clear preference for kits and content that can be completed by following simple lessons, rather than complex and highly difficult projects."
All patterns used in the content are created by Moon herself, with a particular focus on solving common difficulties faced by beginners. Many people do not know how to read knitting charts, and the names of techniques can vary from one creator to another, causing confusion. The mix of symbol charts, Korean terms, and English abbreviations also acted as a barrier to entry.
To address this, she developed the 'Crochet Needle Card' and 'Large Needle Card.' Each card features a QR code that links directly to a YouTube video demonstrating the technique. Moon explained, "I got the idea from how children use word cards to learn letters. I thought knitters also needed intuitive learning tools." These products are sold through crowdfunding, and last year, combined sales of the two cards reached approximately 300 million won.
Recently, she introduced Cafe24's 'YouTube Shopping' feature to expand her commerce business. The DIY kits and card products are displayed directly in the channel's 'Store' tab and video content to drive immediate purchases. The flagship 'Ketchup Keyring Kit' sold more than 500 units shortly after launch, generating buzz among younger consumers.
Moon emphasized, "By seamlessly connecting content and products, the conversion rate has increased. The strength lies in enabling purchases directly within the viewing flow, without the need for separate link guidance."
She continues to dedicate herself to product development. To address the inconvenience of yarn rolling around or having to carry multiple tools, she collaborated with 'Knitting Friend' to develop the multi-purpose tool 'Banit.' This product is foldable; when unfolded, the yarn unravels smoothly without tangling, and an internal safety blade allows users to cut yarn without scissors. It is designed to be carry-on compliant for air travel, making it convenient for use on the go. The goal is to launch the product in the first half of this year.
She is also experimenting with new materials. Currently, over 90% of the yarn used in the DIY kits is domestically produced, and recently, she has begun manufacturing her own yarn in collaboration with domestic factories. To create a fluffy texture suitable for making dolls, the feel has been enhanced by layering short fibers around the yarn core.

Moon stated, "I want Mungchi Workshop to be a brand that takes care of all the preparation and technical concerns so that knitters can focus solely on knitting itself. I will continue to research and develop new tools and methods going forward."
