According to the police, at around 12:11 a.m. that day, Jang allegedly stabbed A, a 17-year-old female high school sophomore, with a weapon on the sidewalk of a main road near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, resulting in her death.

Police investigations found that Jang had chased after victim A to commit the crime, then attacked B, who ran over from across the street, before fleeing. It has been confirmed that there were no additional crimes committed during his escape.
