[Feature] A Deeper, Later Spring... Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon Awash with Pink Double-Flowered Cherry Blossoms
Double-Flowered Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom at April's End
A Rich Charm Amidst Tranquility... Savoring the Final Echoes of Spring
Spring in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, encountered at the tail end of April, arrives one beat slower but seeps in much deeper. At the heart of it all lies Seonamsa Temple.
Although Seonamsa Temple is a renowned thousand-year-old temple inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it possesses a calm and unpretentious charm rather than dazzling splendor. Perhaps for this reason, the double-flowered cherry blossoms that appear around this time, as spring quietly makes its exit, seem especially beautiful as they tint the temple grounds in shades of pink.

After catching your breath from the gentle climb and stepping into the temple grounds, you are met with a unique scene—fully bloomed double-flowered cherry blossoms harmonizing with the tranquil atmosphere of the temple. Around the Daeungjeon Hall, the monks’ quarters, and along the winding stone walls, the abundance of blossoms creates an uncanny stillness, as if time has momentarily paused.
Typically, double-flowered cherry blossoms reach their peak from mid to late April, blooming later than standard cherry blossoms. With petals layered upon petals, they resemble small peonies, boasting a richer, deeper color. Yet, their beauty is never overwhelming; instead, it feels understated. In this way, they subtly resemble Seonamsa Temple itself, which has quietly held a millennium of history since the Baekje era.
On this day, visitors drawn by this charm lingered throughout Seonamsa Temple, capturing photos and savoring the last moments of spring. Many ran to check the photos they had just taken, and if they were not satisfied, asked to take them again—a scene repeated throughout the temple. Perhaps because of the friendly competition and playful banter, laughter echoed all around.
Normally, the temple would be quiet and solemn, but beneath the double-flowered cherry blossoms, that formality seemed to dissolve. The silence that usually envelops the temple felt as if it had been gently lifted.

Especially noteworthy is the 'Wosong,' a pine tree that has survived for 500 to 600 years, offering visitors another layer of mystery. These are emotions that can only be felt as the double-flowered cherry blossoms gradually fade away.

The spring at Seonamsa Temple lingers not as flamboyance, but as a deep afterglow. I recommend walking slowly under the touch of the double-flowered cherry blossoms, lingering, and truly experiencing the passing spring in its entirety.
