Choi Ki-young Secures General Election Ticket... Bonghwa Voters Choose a New Direction
Nomination of People Power Party Candidate Confirmed
Disruption of Incumbent Structure Emerges as a New Factor in the Election
Choi Ki-young, Vice Chairman of the People Power Party North Gyeongsang Provincial Committee, has been officially confirmed as the party's candidate for Bonghwa County Governor in the June 3 local elections.
On April 22, the People Power Party North Gyeongsang Provincial Nomination Committee announced the results of its candidate selections for 13 basic local government constituencies in the province, confirming Vice Chairman Choi as the nominee for Bonghwa County Governor.

This nomination result is seen as a signal for a realignment of the conservative bloc in Bonghwa.
In particular, with incumbent Governor Park Hyun-guk failing to pass the party primary, observers interpret the Bonghwa County Governor election as tilting toward "new leadership" rather than "incumbent retention." Local media also analyzed the outcome as part of a broader trend in North Gyeongsang's local government elections where some incumbents are being replaced.
Choi has built organizational strength and recognition within the party based on his political career as Vice Chairman of the Provincial Committee, and with this nomination, he has now seized the initiative for the general election. The official list released by the party's nomination committee also includes Choi as "Choi Ki-young, Vice Chairman of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Committee, Bonghwa County Governor candidate."
The Bonghwa County Governor race has long been highly competitive with multiple candidates, but as the People Power Party candidate is widely regarded as the focal point of local sentiment, this nomination is expected to serve as a major turning point that could determine the outcome of the general election. Previous local opinion polls and election coverage have classified the Bonghwa County Governor race as a close contest between the advantages of incumbency and the momentum for change.
Both within and outside political circles, it is believed that Choi's competitiveness in the general election will ultimately depend on how convincingly he can link the "case for change" to the agenda of regional development.
With his nomination confirmed, the key variable in the general election is now how Choi will concretely articulate his messages regarding local issues such as Bonghwa's future industries, responses to population decline, and strengthening rural competitiveness.

This means that the nomination is not merely a selection of a candidate, but marks the starting point for a choice about the future direction of Bonghwa's county administration, a fact that carries significant meaning.
