Four Perspectives on a Fire: Original Musical "Black Mary Poppins" Opens in June
The original musical "Black Mary Poppins" will open at the Link Art Center BUX Hall on June 18.
"Black Mary Poppins" is an original musical inspired by the British children’s novel "Mary Poppins." The production is structured into three versions, each unfolding a single incident from a different character’s perspective, as well as a final edition. The three character-driven stories are "Hans: Defense for the Mary Poppins Murder Case," "Hermann: The Sandman’s Appearance," and "Jonas: Memories of the Forest," with the concluding version titled "Anna’s Room."
Production company Show Note announced that the musical will be performed as an "All-round" version, presenting all four editions sequentially.
The story centers on four siblings who survive a fire at the mansion of renowned German psychologist Dr. Grachen Schwarz in 1926, and the disappearance of their nanny, Mary Schmidt.
"Black Mary Poppins" delivers a message about the dignity of human free will and the healing of scars, through a narrative that weaves between past and present, and between consciousness and the unconscious.
Since its premiere in 2012, it has consistently been loved by audiences for seven seasons. It also demonstrated the strength of Korean original musicals by entering Japan in 2014, and China in 2018 and 2019.
The role of Hans Simon, the eldest sibling and a lawyer who seems perfect on the outside but suffers from alcoholism, will be played by Park Jeongwon—who previously performed as Jonas Engels in the 2016 and 2020 seasons—as well as new cast members Moon Gyeongcho and Yoo Taeyul.
Yoon Seungwoo will reprise his role as Hermann Dichter, the free-spirited artist and emotionally unstable second sibling, joined by new cast members Won Taemin, Park Junhyeong, and Kim Kyungrok. Won Taemin will appear starting from the Hermann version and will also perform in the Jonas and Anna versions.
The only female among the siblings, Anna Lea, a music teacher who dreams of a normal life, will be played once again by Lee Jeonghwa, with Lee Hanbyeol and Lee Jaerim newly joining the cast.
The youngest sibling, Jonas Engels, who struggles with both panic disorder and a speech disorder while hiding his pain and wounds, will be portrayed by Jin Ho, Jo Seongpil, and Jeong Jiwoo. The role of Mary Schmidt, the loving nanny of the four siblings and a suspect in the incident, will be played by new cast members Ryu Suhwa and An Yujin, as well as Hong Yunhui, who has appeared in every season since the 2013 revival.
