In a video released on social networking services (SNS), the robot was seen walking, gesturing, squatting, and lifting its leg, mimicking dog-like behaviors. It also responded when a passing pet dog barked at it.
Citizens looked on with curiosity, filmed the robot, and some even approached to talk to it. The robot was sent out onto the streets to promote an upcoming exhibition at the Digital Art Center in Palo Alto, California, and was reported to have moved around the Oracle Park and SoMa areas.
The robot is part of the “Regular Animals” project by digital artist Mike Winkelmann, also known as Beeple. The work is notable for its realistic human face, achieved by combining a silicone mask made by a special effects designer with the robot dog's body. In addition to Musk, versions featuring the faces of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Andy Warhol, and Pablo Picasso also exist.
Online reactions have been mixed. Some called it “creepy and bizarre” or “unsettling,” while others described it as “fun” and “ingenious.”
