A total of 23 lawmakers from the People Power Party and the Reform New Party have joined the Conservative Climate and Environment Network.
Kim Sohee explained, "The Conservative Climate and Environment Network was launched to address climate and environmental issues as matters of energy, industry, livelihoods, and national interest. The broader conservative bloc will come together to discuss and implement responsible policy alternatives."
The event was also attended by John Flesher, Managing Director of the UK Conservative Environment Network (CEN), Lully Miura, founder of Japan’s Satomori, and Jaeyoung Lee, CEO of Areumdaun Gakku Neun Teojeon.
On the day of the event, Kim Sohee stated, "Climate and environmental issues are directly linked to the lives of citizens, the cost of living, industrial competitiveness, exports and supply chains, and energy security. It is now time to respond not with words, but with effective policies and the capacity to execute them."
The founding declaration outlined the network's key objectives, including: ▲ Establishing a balanced zero-carbon energy mix ▲ Building a responsible social safety net to protect citizens' lives and property from extreme weather ▲ Enacting effective systems to reduce plastic pollution.
In the declaration, the Conservative Climate and Environment Network emphasized, "To prepare for climate response and the age of AI, we will promote the transition to low-carbon energy sources. Nuclear power will serve as the main energy source, renewable energy will supplement, and we will create a balanced energy mix of zero-carbon sources including hydrogen."
They also added, "Instead of imposing blanket bans and burdensome regulations based on unrealistic goals such as 'zero plastic,' we will establish effective systems to reduce the reckless use of single-use plastics and to increase reuse, recycling, and energy conversion rates, thereby ultimately preventing soil and marine pollution."
