Jihye Shin of the Basic Income Party Announces Candidacy in Gwangsan-eul By-election in Gwangju
Emphasizing the Significance of the First National Assembly Election for the Integrated Metropolitan City

Jihye Shin, former leader and current Supreme Council Member of the Basic Income Party, has officially announced her candidacy in the by-election for the Gwangsan-gu-eul district of Gwangju. The Basic Income Party has declared that this election marks a critical political turning point, as it will elect the first National Assembly member since the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City system, and the party has pledged an all-out response at the party level.
On the afternoon of April 22, Shin held a press conference in the briefing room of the Gwangju City Council. She stated, "This election is to choose the first National Assembly member for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City," adding, "The Basic Income Party is the party that has been designing the future of the Integrated Metropolitan City." She further asserted that "30 years of local politics stagnated under the Democratic Party's monopoly has turned Gwangju into an impoverished city," and put forth industrial innovation and expanding citizens' incomes as her key policy goals.

View original imageShin previously served as the second-term leader of the Basic Income Party and has also been active as a member of the Presidential Committee for Social Reform under the Prime Minister and as the chairperson of the party’s Special Committee on Political Reform. She announced that, along with her preliminary candidate registration, she plans to unveil pledges for industrial innovation in Gwangsan-gu centered on youth policies, such as a guaranteed first job program for young people and basic AI education for the youth.

At the Gwangju press conference, Hyein Yong, leader of the Basic Income Party and head of the Honam election campaign committee, was present and expressed support. Yong stated, "Jihye Shin has been a comrade since the founding of the party," and emphasized, "The party will put all its efforts into securing a National Assembly seat for Gwangsan-eul." Also attending were Hyuncheol Moon, prospective candidate for Buk-gu District 1 of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City Council, and Eunyoung Park, prospective candidate for Gwangsan-gu District 3 of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City Council, both of whom expressed their support as well.
